Dakota Fanning’s Vogue Italy Fashion Shoot

Whenever female stars come of age, they always find a way to tell the world that they’re all grown up. Some go for sexier film roles, some party like crazy and become tabloid fodder, while the rest pose for fashion magazines.

Miley Cyrus did it for Vanity Fair in 2008. Princess Beatrice of York did it for Tatler in 2005. Now Dakota Fanning’s doing it—a lot of it, actually. She was Teen Vogue’s cover girl on December 2009, and V Magazine’s in January. Now she’s in Vogue Italia’s February 2010 issue.

Her Tom Munro fashion editorial outdoes all the other couture shoots we’ve seen of the now 16-year-old.

“I’ve grown up,” Dakota said in the interview, “The parts I choose today are different.”

“The photo shoot for Vogue Italia was like a dream,” she said.

And yes, thick eyebrows are back!

That’s it. I cannot wait for her latest flick, The Runaways!

Dakota and Kristen Channel ’70s Rock

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting sick of today’s pre-packaged bubblegum girl bands and popstars. I wasn’t born yet in the ’70s, but they sure had a lot of sincerely talented rockers back then.

In that era, YouTube and Facebook weren’t even invented yet, let alone the Internet, so wannabes had to really prove their mettle in the industry. Getting signed was the only way to get your music out there, so this was a privilege that only a limited number of talents could attain. Male rockers dominated the scene, and female rockers had to double their efforts to get noticed.

When I found out that the biopic of ’70s girl band The Runaways was produced for the big screen, I did a rock-on hand signal and screamed a la Led Zeppelin! The entertainment business needs a major transition from the likes of Camp Rock and High School Musical, and The Runaways made the perfect entrance.

The casters did a great job. Who else could channel the groovy but tough rocker attitudes of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie? Teen stars Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart unleash their inner wild child for The Runaways, directed by Floria Sigismondi. The girls even underwent major training and transformations for the flick.

Coming out in spring, the movie is based on lead singer Cherie Currie’s book Neon Angel, a biography of her experiences as a rock star. I cannot wait for this movie! Rock with me now: “I’m your ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb!”

Dakota Fanning Is All Grown Up

As a pint-sized child star, she captured our hearts with her acting skills in I Am Sam (2001), Taken (2002), The Cat In The Hat (2003), and War of the Worlds (2005), to name a few.

Can you believe she’s turning 16 next month? While most Hollywood child stars make a difficult and troubled transition to teenhood or adulthood, Dakota has managed to do it gracefully.

She makes a stunning debut on one of the recent covers of V Magazine’s The Size Issue, where she dons Alexander Wang’s threads. The other cover features Gabby Sidibe, star of Precious.

In the cover story, Dakota talks about family, school, and her non-showbiz life. She also talks about her role in the upcoming The Runaways, a coming-of-age true story about an all-girl rock band in the ’70s, where she co-stars with Twilight’s Kirsten Stewart.

I admire how Dakota has kept it together without succumbing to the rebellious druggie and partying lifestyle that most coming-of-age Hollywood stars go through (Hello Britney, Lindsay, and Miley!) As a kid, I always saw her as adult trapped in a kid’s body. She’s always had the mature yet adorable aura, which must’ve been why she was able to pull off those challenging roles.
