Twilight: Breaking Dawn To Pay Out $25 Million Per Character

Twilight Characters - Bella, Edward and JacobRobert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, more commonly referred to as Edward, Bella and Jacob are about to get a huge pay day for the upcoming Twilight: Breaking Dawn shoot.

According to industry insiders, the studios is paying each of the central characters $25 million for their roles. Each actor will also receive 7.5% of the films gross, a number that could push their salaries just over the $40 million mark.

The large pay days shouldn’t come as a surprise as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has already taken in $161 in domestic box office earnings since debuting on June 30.

Twilight Takes Huge Bite Out Of Midnight Box Office

Twilight Eclipse Promo PictureThe Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment in the uber-popular vampire series took in $30 million in midnight box office sales, setting a new record for a single overnight take.

The previous Twilight movie New Moon took in $26.3 million when it arrived in November 2009.

There aren’t lot of new films opening this week, possibly because it’s hard to compete with blockbusters like Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, and others. IMDB lists four new relases, and get more details from their profile pages, which I’ve linked to from each movie’s title.

New Releases

  • Shrek Forever After. Voices: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy. Directed by Mike Mitchell. This might be one for the family. This fourth Shrek animated film is said to be the final one in the series, but there’ll be a Puss in Boots spin-off. For me, the first one was fun, but I had no interest after the second. At this point, I think they’re beating a dead horse. Or in this case, donkey? Oh and if you’re planning to take the family to see this, be warned that adults will be charged as much as $20 per ticket for the IMAX 3D version.
  • MacGruber. Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer and many others. Directed by Jorma Taccone. This comedy is a spin-off of a series of skits on Saturday Night Live that spoofs the MacGyver adventure TV series that ran from 1985-92. The MacGruber tries to be innovative and ingenious in getting out of difficult and dangerous situations, but is usually either too dumb or too distracted to succeed. The SNL skits always end with the building MacGruber is in blowing up. Not sure how this show will translate to film, and personally it’s my least favorite SNL skit, but I’d go see it for Val Kilmer as the villian Dieter Von Cunth, or the very versatile Kristen Wiig, who is one several SNL cast members or alumni that are in the movie.
  • Holy Rollers [LA/NY]. Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Bartha, Danny A. Abeckkaser. Directed by Kevin Asch.
  • Solitary Man [limited]. Michael Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Jesse Eisenberg. Directed by Brian Koppleman and David Levien.

Still in theaters are recent releases Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Letters to Juliet, Just Wright, How to Train Your Dragon (animated), A Nightmare on Elm Street, Date Night, The Backup Plan, Furry Vengeance, Clash of the Titans, and others.

  • There might be two versions of 20,000 Leagues under the sea. One from Disney and the other from Fox.

Screen Scene Tidbits

  • Paul Greengrass is focusing on Treasure Island and will not direct the 3D remake of Fantastic Voyage. [Deadline]
  • The cast of the upcoming Twilight: Breaking Dawn vampire flick, based on the book series, asked for between $1.5-4M each but will get up to $1.25M. [Deadline, THR Esq]
  • If you saw the first Sex and the City film, you know how full of product placement it was, as well as that Carrie Bradshaw uses a Mac computer. Not this time. In the second SatC movie, out May 27th, she’ll be using an HP laptop because of a partnership deal with Hewlett-Packard. [PopEater, CeleBitchy]

An Army of Vampires

A significant number of die-hard Twilight fans nearly died on Friday—and it isn’t because real-life vampires attacked them. Oh, c’mon! You know vampires don’t really exist, right?

The trailer of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse officially premiered on Friday on Oprah. Dakota Fanning, who plays the evil vampire Jane in the movie, introduced the trailer on the show via Skype. She also discussed how excited she was about her role.

“Jane is just such a great character to play,” the 16-year-old said. “She’s kind of evil and the costumes are amazing and the makeup was amazing. To get to have the blood-red eyes was so cool and something I was really looking forward to.”

I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again. I’m with Team Wolf! Taylor Lautner looks hotter this time around. The CGI, costumes, and makeup also look more realistic compared to the first Twilight movie; I remember I kept giggling whenever Dr. Cullen would enter a scene with his white cake-y foundation.

June 30 is the date, Twi-hard fans!

Stephenie Meyer’s Non-Vampire Movie

In case you didn’t know, the famous Twilight novelist has written a book outside of the cult vampire series. After the success of the Twilight saga, Stephenie Meyer wrote a science fiction book called The Host, and it isn’t about bloodsuckers and werewolves.

Released in 2008, The Host actually did well in sales, though not as phenomenal as the Twilight series.

Unfortunately, I am not a fan of Stephenie Meyer’s superfluous and adjective-bombarded writing, especially after seeing unedited chapters of her books leaked online. No, I did not bother picking up The Host. Similar to Invasion of The Body Snatchers, Meyer’s story is about aliens that have taken over the minds and bodies of humans, with an injection of love themes to tickle your fancy.

Please don’t kill me, Twi-hard fans. I did appreciate the storyline of the Twilight series. I did swoon over Jacob Black. I’m just not fond of her writing style, that’s all.

Back to The Host. They decided to make a movie version of the book, and Gattaca writer/director Andrew Niccol is taking the lead. Who do you think should play the lead roles? The casting has yet to begin, so your guess is as good as mine. According to reports, if everything goes according to plan, they will start filming in 2011.
