In my recent article, I mentioned V Magazine’s The Size Issue, which features two different covers—Dakota Fanning and Gabby Sidibe. If you’re reading into V’s figure of speech, pint-sized Dakota represents the “great things come in small packages” analogy of a child star who made her mark in the ‘biz before even hitting her teens.
As for Gabby, if you haven’t heard about her yet, she’s the newest plus-sized “it” girl to make it to Hollywood. She played the lead role in Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire, last year’s critically-acclaimed Lee Daniels movie about an obese, illiterate, and abused teenager named Precious who lives in Harlem, New York with her dysfunctional family. The poignant drama, which also stars singers Mariah Carey and Mo’Nique, has earned various nominations and awards.
Gabby, whose real name is Gabourey Sidibe, makes her fashion debut on V Magazine’s cover. The 26-year-old is the star of their “Big Love” feature, which embraces voluptuous women in the realm of fashion and beauty. What a refreshing change from the starving size-0 models and celebs!
She also recently attended the Golden Globe Awards, where she was nominated as best performance by an actress in a motion picture drama. She lost to Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, but she was more excited about being in the red carpet with her favorite celebrities.
“It’s really exciting,” she told Bill Keveney of USA Today. “It’s a crazy parallel universe I never thought I’d be in.”
Keep your head up, Gabby! I’d love to see more of your talent in this industry.
