Slumdog Millionaire child actress Rubina Ali is homeless for the fourth time in just two years after a fire burnt down her shantytown home, leaving Rubina and more than a dozen family members without a place to stay.
Rubina played Young Latika in the 2008 film and made headlines when her Mumbai home was destroyed to make way for a new railway track. Her second home was flooded by burst pipes and her third home in Jan. 2010 was destroyed by the city once again for redevelopment plans.
The most recent fire has destroyed more than 2,000 homes near Gareeb Nagar.
According to Rubina, during the most recent home loss:
“I lost all the books, wooden toys, photographs and awards that I received for the film.”
According to her father.
“Soon, a neighbor came to alert us about the fire. We all rushed out after taking only the basic belongings. There was no time to take anything else.”
While Rubina added:
“I had kept all the newspaper clippings that reminded me of how I became famous after ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Now everything is gone. I spent the entire night near the railway station with some people and have just returned to this spot. I don’t even know where the rest of my family members are.”
According to PopCrunch:
Her family has been given a flat by the Jai Ho Trust — a fund set up by Danny Boyle to support the youngest stars of his blockbuster feature, including Ali’s co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail.
“But it will still take us a month to move there,” Rafique explains. “Had we moved in there earlier, we would not have had to see this day.”
