2013 is the year of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and their continuing quest to dominate pop music. What’s with the rift, then?
In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, the former is finally putting a stop to those rumors.
“Gaga and I like to publicly dismiss it because it’s not healthy,” she declares.
“You want to feel music. You want it to resonate and relate to you. You can’t look at it like a competition because you ruin the reason why you love music. But I think that sometimes our fan groups are so big and strong, they use it as ammunition.”
The supposed rivalry escalated this year when both pop stars’ lead singles — “Roar” and “Applause”, respectively — leaked at the same time, prompting fans to look out for the success of both singles.
“I just think it’s very unfair of anyone to pit another woman against another woman, especially in the space of music, when we’re all just trying to be taken seriously at all as females,” says Lady Gaga in a September interview with Andy Cohen.
We might not see the end of this, as ARTPOP gears for release next week; comparisons will ensue.
