Paramount Pictures is trying to determine if Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) can still put butts in the seats with a new MI4 movie. Apparently the studio is rethinking the movies future after a luke warm reception by fans to the new Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz comedy Knight and Day which has failed to put up big numbers.
The studio which is set to release Mission on December 16th, 2001 just isn’t sure Cruise has the star power to bring in the type of money required to produce such a big movie.
Deadline Hollywood who scooped this story said of the reasons behind the disposal of the movie:
“Hollywood has been buzzing that the studio might kill MI4 if Knight doesn’t connect with audiences despite Cruise’s action hero character. What are Paramount’s choices? The studio could choose not to accept the mission, but that seems next to impossible after all the development that’s already gone into this still viable franchise. Especially after Paramount repaired its fractured relationship with Tom around this film and just committed to a film with his Les Grossman character.”
We’ll post this one as a rumor that makes sense and just hope for a nice box office when Les Grossman debuts in a new movie, hopefully sometime in early 2011. Perhaps a big debut for Grossman will pull MI4 from the ashes.
