For us, it’s a pretty costume, but for Taiwan, it’s one helluva political statement.
During the Asian leg of her Prismatic World Tour in Taipei, Katy Perry‘s donning of the sunflower dress slides in with the recently-concluded first anniversary of the Sunflower Student Movement, which had students occupy the Taiwanese parliament to voice their dismay for the “Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement” with China.
Some Taiwanese feared that this pact would give the mainland further economic control over the island nation.
“That’s super fierce, wearing sunflowers and the Taiwanese flag,” one fan gushes. “No wonder mainland artists say Taiwan has too much freedom of expression.”
“God bless Katy Perry. She’s now Taiwan’s most famous advocate without even knowing it,” another tweets.
Could be just pure coincidence?
More Katy here!
