Director Joe Wright, known mostly for work on the movie Atonement is rumored to be working on a live-action version of the story made popular by the Disney cartoon The Little Mermaid.
According to several reports, The Little Mermaid will be adapted from the original Hans Christian Andersen fairtale from 1837, rather than Disney’s more “colorful” 1989 version. It’s also expected that Ariel will lose much of her “caucasian” color.
It won’t be the first time the Andersen tale will be adapted for a non-cartoon version, Little Mermaid has also been a staged musical, a comic book and a 1976 Russian live-action film. The story was even turned into a 2005 Danish Ballet according to PopCrunch.
What do you think? I’m predicting quite the train wreck.
