Alcoholism has been one of society’s major problems. It continues to affect both the youth and adults regardless of race and religious affiliation.
Celebrities are not exempted from this social woe. Being human as they are, many have had struggles over their addiction to alcohol and there are still some who continue to battle alcoholism. These stars are more prone to this problem due to the fact that they can afford to drown themselves in their favorite drinks whenever they want to. In fact, you may have no idea they were or are alcohol addicts.
Ben Affleck
Actor Ben Affleck entered a rehab facility for alcoholism in 2001. He remained sober after that but after a decade was seen again drinking at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011.
Fortunately, the Armageddon star’s career was not affected by his alcoholism problem as he even won an Oscar award for Best Film for his film entitled “Argo.” On the contrary, it was his relationships that made an impact on his movies more.
Zac Efron
Unknown to many people perhaps including his fans, Zac Efron underwent a rehab program back in 2013. The High School Musical star eventually opened up to the media about his difficulty in battling drugs and alcohol. He considered it “a never-ending struggle.”
Going to a rehab facility is not easy on the pocket hence, it is a good idea to have a health insurance to shoulder one’s bills. Many insurance companies today cover various types of in-patient treatments. For one, Cigna covers alcohol and drug rehab similar to other global providers.
Michael J. Fox
Before he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, Michael J. Fox was having alcohol problems. Thankfully, he was able to get over it with the support of his family and since then has become a strong advocate of Parkinson’s after accepting his condition.
The actor has also set up the Michael J. Fox Foundation which funds research on Parkinson’s disease. He has also published a book called “Lucky Man” in which he shares his bout with alcohol and how he used it to escape fear caused by his diagnosis.
Mel Gibson
Actor Mel Gibson was arrested in 2006 due to a driving under the influence (DUI) case. But although his career was badly affected after that incident, he was able to reform and gained control of his alcohol addiction.
The Australian actor known for his films Mad Max, Lethal Weapon and Brave Heart is said to have a volatile behavior and has a habit of issuing controversial remarks.
Robin Williams
The late Robin Williams was then battling with not only cocaine addiction but as well as alcoholism. He started his journey to sobriety after his friend John Belushi died of an overdose. The two were known to attend parties together.
Unfortunately, the comedian suffered a relapse in the years before his death. His renewed addiction was reported to have caused his divorce with wife Marsha Garces in 2008.
